Journal Entries

Journal Entry Format

Number Journal Entry Topics
1 Write a friendly letter (using correct friendly letter format) to one of the characters from the play, "The Diary of Anne Frank."
2 Write a reaction to the presentation given by a Holocaust survivor.
3-5 Write a reaction to our daily in-class play performances of "The Diary of Anne Frank."  Use the following examples for ideas.
  • What would you do if you were in Miep or Mr. Kraler's position?
  • Otto Frank had very strong beliefs.  Describe one of your personal beliefs and explain why it is important to you.
  • How would you react to living in such close quarters with complete strangers?
  • If you had to go into hiding, what would you take and why?
  • How do different situations like this bring out the best in some and the worst in others?
  • Describe your feelings about Anne's experience.
6 Describe your reaction to the "ribbon experiment."  What color was your ribbon?  What special privileges did this afford you?  How did you feel for yourself and your fellow classmates?
7 What do you need to live happily?  Consider both material possessions and intangibles such as love and freedom.
8-10 You have been assigned the identity of a real child who lived during the Holocaust.  Pretend you are that child and write three journal entries that explain how you feel about what is happening to you during Hitler's rise to power.  This should be approached as a creative writing exercise.
11 Write a poem about your experiences through this quest or your feeling about the Holocaust and the Frank family.  There are poetry links on the webquest home page to help you with this.
12  Using the proper business letter format, write a letter to the leader of a country where children suffer the same or similar mistreatment as Anne Frank.  Explain why children deserve the same rights as adults and the importance of treating others fairly.  Remember, there are links to help you with this on the webquest home page.
13 Using your artistic ability and a sheet of 8 x 11 1/2 paper, design a quilt block for a quilt that would be designed to remember victims of the Holocaust.
14 Create your own journal entry.
15 For your final journal entry, write a reflection that explains what you have gained from studying Anne Frank and the Holocaust.
