The school nurse or designee will examine any student with possible signs of head lice when referred by a school employee or parent. If the student is found to have head lice, his or her parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up the student from school.
The nurse or designee will provide the parent/guardian with a head lice fact sheet, this policy and suggested treatment information. The parent/guardian must properly treat the student for head lice, along with removing the nits (eggs), before the student will be allowed to return to school.
Upon return to school, the student must first be checked by the nurse or designee before he or she may return to class. The parent/guardian should accompany the student to school that day. If live head lice are found, the parent/guardian will have to take the student back home. If only nits remain, the student will be able to stay at school (if he or she has been properly treated). The parent must continue nit removal before the student returns the next day.
The student will also be examined by the nurse or designee one week after treatment, to be sure there has no been no reinfestation.
A written statement from
the student's healthcare provider, stating there is no evidence of head lice,
will be accepted in lieu of the second examination.
